Custom Blue and White Imitation Ostrich Harley Bagger Seat

This custom Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycle seat was created for a large audio bagger built primarily for shows and special events. The owner wanted something bold enough to complement the motorcycle’s custom appearance, audio system and overall show-bike personality.

Starting with a Mustang solo seat, Atomic Cycle Works created a distinctive blue-and-white design using customer-supplied imitation ostrich upholstery material. The finished seat features blue imitation ostrich, a contrasting white imitation ostrich insert, white welting and blue double-diamond stitching.

The combination creates a dramatic custom look without losing the recognizable shape of the original touring seat.

Custom Upholstery Designed for a Harley-Davidson Bagger

A custom motorcycle seat should look like it belongs on the motorcycle. Color, texture, stitching, panel placement and welting all need to work with the bike’s paint, bodywork and overall style.

For this seat, we incorporated:

• Blue imitation ostrich upholstery
• A contrasting white imitation ostrich insert
• White welting, also commonly called piping

Will Atomic Cycle Works Use Customer-Supplied Material?

Yes, we will consider using upholstery material supplied by a customer. However, the material must be reviewed before the project begins, and customer-supplied material is not covered by our material warranty.

We spend considerable time researching materials that offer the wear resistance, stretch, flexibility, ultraviolet protection and water resistance needed for motorcycle seats. A material may look great online while being poorly suited for outdoor exposure or the constant movement experienced by a motorcycle seat.

When a customer provides the material, we cannot verify or guarantee:

• UV and fade resistance
• Water resistance
• Abrasion and wear resistance
• Resistance to cracking or delamination
• Proper stretch and recovery
• Compatibility with adhesives
• Long-term outdoor performance
• Consistency between separate pieces or dye lots

For those reasons, Atomic Cycle Works does not warranty customer-supplied upholstery materials or failures caused by those materials.

Always contact us before purchasing or shipping material. We can help determine whether the material appears appropriate for the proposed design and motorcycle.

Always Purchase More Material Than You Think You Need

One of the most important lessons from this project is simple: never order the bare minimum amount of upholstery material.

The customer supplied only a limited amount of blue and white imitation ostrich. We were able to complete the seat, but the shortage required us to add seams in areas where we would have preferred to use uninterrupted material. There was also not enough white imitation ostrich to complete all the welting according to the original design plan.

Professional upholstery requires extra material for several reasons:

• Pattern placement and directional grain
• Stretch direction
• Matching texture or printed patterns
• Welting and decorative trim
• Sewing allowances
• Test pieces
• Unexpected defects
• Design adjustments
• Mistakes or damaged sections
• Future repairs

As a practical rule, purchase considerably more material than your initial measurements suggest—often as much as twice the amount you believe the project requires. The exact amount depends on the seat, usable material width, pattern direction, insert design and amount of welting.

The best approach is to send us photographs and measurements before ordering anything. We can provide recommendations based on your specific seat and proposed design.

Why Proper Material Selection Matters

Motorcycle-seat upholstery faces conditions that ordinary interior fabric may never encounter. The material must tolerate sunlight, temperature changes, moisture, rider movement and repeated entry and exit.

Show motorcycles may receive less riding time, but material selection still matters. A seat can be exposed to direct sunlight and changing weather at outdoor shows, rallies and events. Choosing material based only on color or texture may produce disappointing long-term results.

This audio bagger is primarily a show bike and is not expected to receive the same use as a daily-ridden touring motorcycle. That made the owner’s supplied imitation ostrich appropriate for the visual goal, with the understanding that its long-term performance could not be guaranteed by our shop.

Do not ship your seat or purchase material until we have reviewed the project and confirmed availability.
